These Medium Stories Earned Me $0.00

You win some, you lose some.

Though I wouldn’t count these stories as “losers” since lots can be gained from them, mainly in the form of lessons.

As you can see from the above image, these four stories have made me absolutely nothing on Medium. And I’m OK with that.

The Medium Stories That Made Me $0.00

Though I wouldn’t count these stories as “losers” since lots can be gained from them, mainly in the form of lessons.

As you can see from the above image, these four stories have made me absolutely nothing on Medium. And I’m OK with that.

Why (I Think) My Medium Stories Made $0.00

  • Medium readers prefer stories. Blog posts aren’t a thing on Medium. They’re stories. Rather than writing from a distant place, void of emotion, it seems Medium prefers stories that are heartfelt, vulnerable, and moving.

  • Medium readers prefer advice. While I’ve pointed out some spectacular sites in Turin, I haven’t given anyone friendly advice on how they can improve. As a reader, I have learned lots about myself through the stories of others on Medium — my $0.00 stories don’t offer this.

  • Turin is pretty niche. Travel writing doesn’t seem to perform exceptionally well on Medium (at least in my subjective experience). What’s more, I chose a city in Italy that’s sparsely visited.

What I’ll Do Differently

Nothing. I don’t regret posting them. Not every story is going to be massively successful, and that’s fine. These stories are sourced from my book, “Taste Torino” so I didn’t spend any energy writing from scratch anyway.

The Takeaways

  • If your goal is to make money on Medium, it may be best to avoid travel guides
  • Instead, focus on real stories and provide advice
  • Avoid writing on topics that are too niche
  • If your goal is to write and you’re not financially motivated — do what you want!
