Digital Product Ideas

After determining there’s sufficient demand for your eProduct, you then need to put in the work to create it. In case you’re at a loss for what types of digital products you can sell, here are some ideas for inspiration:

1. eBooks

If you’re willing to research or write about something you’re passionate about, you can write an ebook relatively quickly (we’re talking days to weeks — I turned my thesis into an ebook quickly). Or, if you’re creative and want to tell a story, try fiction out.

2. eCourses

eCourses have a huge profit potential. In fact, some report more than ten times the profit with eCourses than they had writing eBooks (while spending a fraction of the time developing an eCourse since it mainly involves speaking in front of a camera).

3. Create and Flip Websites

Are you an expert at creating attractive website designs? Or creating content? You can develop websites and sell them at various stages. From freshly created, to fully-mature websites with tons of traffic. Try using a website like Flippa.com.

4. Sell Domain Names

There are people who make millions with those (though it remains a bit of a mystery to me!). All you need to do, in essence, is find domain names that you think are going to become in-demand in the future. It’s basically like buying digital real estate in the ghetto before hipsters come in and make it nice! You buy a domain name before it’s in-demand by companies and sell it for a higher price.

5. Create Premium Templates for WordPress

If you’re talented with WordPress and design, you have an opportunity to make passive income by selling premium themes. Sometimes standard, free themes just don’t cut it on WordPress. Users may be looking for something more robust, which is where you meet that demand.

6. Make a Documentary or Movie and Sell It

If you’re passionate about creating films, you can try your hand at creating your own film. Whether it’s a short film or an entire series, you can sell it from your own website as a passive form of income. Or, you can accept donations on platforms like Patreon for your premium content.

7. Diet or Exercise Plans

This is a popular option for fitness influencers on Instagram and YouTube. People see nice bodies and people in the gym and want to get a beach body, too. If you have a nice body or are a nutritionist, consider creating a generic diet regimen you can sell en masse. Or, you can create customized plans (which is a bit more hands-on, but can earn you more money).

8. Premium Content

If you have a popular blog and want to profit on your high traffic or have a bunch of dedicated readers, you can offer content — at an expense. Whether you go more in-depth on a free post you’ve written on, or cover special topics, that’s for you to decide. If your content is quality and you have regular readers, chances are some are willing to pay or more.

9. Coaching

If you’re good at something — from crafting to parenting, diet and exercise, and more, you can capitalize on your knowledge and expertise by teaching people remotely. This is typically done with Skype, text messages and other forms of communication to give people tailored advice about something you’re knowledgeable about.

10. Consulting

Consulting is similar to coaching, but is more business-oriented. Consulting online operates just like consulting in person, except you’re not limited by your physical location. You can give someone tax filing advice from halfway around the world, or teach them how to better use Facebook for their business, etc. — oftentimes at a premium price.

11. Software

This is something I have personal experience with selling and marketing. I did my internship at Languages Point in Turin, Italy and redesigned their homepage as well as English Learning ePlatform sales page (visible at). It was a lot of work, but I created a landing page that highlighted the benefits of their English learning ePlatform and helped create four unique packages at different price points and different levels of access to the platform with the premium package allowing four Skype sessions with a teacher. All the products were completely digital — even the lessons could be done online. What kind of software or platform can you sell?

12. Affiliate Products

Not ready to create your own digital products just yet? No worries! You can still sell digital products and skim off (usually a small) percentage of the sale. One of the most popular programs is Amazon Associates, but there are a plethora of other affiliate programs as well. You can join reputable affiliate marketplaces such as Impact and Rakuten.

Where to Sell Your Digital Products

Some of the best and most popular platforms people use to sell digital products include:

Udemy. Have something you want to share with the world? You can create an ecourse and sell it on Udemy.com. There are many other ecourse selling platforms available, but this tends to be one of the most popular options.

Skillshare. Skillshare is another great marketplace to sell digital courses. Unlike Udemy, which takes a certain percentage of your earnings depending on where buyers come from (i.e. directly from your marketing efforts or from their website), you earn money on Skillshare by gaining time spent on your eCourse and by selling premium memberships.

Flippa. Flippa allows users to buy and sell businesses — from blogs, to ecommerce shops and more. You can buy a website that’s already set up online, or create one and sell it for others to buy — while making a profit, of course.

Teespring. You can sell anything anywhere with Teespring. Some of the most popular items include apparel, home decor, socks, phone cases, accessories and mugs. Basically, you create the design while Teespring supplies the production and shipping. It’s easy!

Cafepress. Cafepress is very similar to Teespring. All you need to do is create the design, do a little marketing, and Cafepress worries about the rest. You can create clothing designs for men and women, houseware, accessories and more.

Amazon Kindle. Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing makes it easy for you to create books from start to finish — all you need to do is provide the content. You can even sell physical printed books from their platform; they have an on-demand printing system.

…and more! From Etsy to Shopify to eBay, there are a variety of places where you can list your digital products for sale.

Creating Your Own Shop

Since these third-party websites take cuts in your profit, I highly recommend using your own website to sell your digital products in addition to these strategies since it’s basically free. Just be sure to read the contract of each individual platform carefully.

If you’re planning on selling across multiple platforms, you may want to obviously avoid exclusive contracts so that you’re not limited to where you can sell (for example, if you enlist in the KDP Select program on Amazon, you cannot list your books on other platforms for the duration of the contract).

The disadvantage of creating a website or using your pre-existing one is that you’re responsible for bringing in the traffic, meanwhile, these third-party websites already have an established audience. And the audience isn’t just there to browse; they’re interested buyers. They know that these websites exist to sell — they’re not just there to browse your free SEO blog post you created, for example, which is a major plus.
